Are you a WWBD?
It's estimated that 2% of the U.S. population might be affected by an undiagnosed, hereditary bleeding disorder. One in every five women (20%) who visits a doctor for heavy menstrual periods has a bleeding disorder. Not all people will experience symptoms, and the degree of the severity in people with bleeding disorders varies significantly. Even a woman with a mild bleeding disorder can experience a diminished quality of life due to anemia, exhaustion, pain and depression. Bleeding disorders can cause severe problems with surgery and childbirth. If you have symptoms of a bleeding disorder, it's important that you talk to your doctor about testing.
Some possible symptoms of a hereditary bleeding disorder include but are not limited to:
- Severe menorrhagia: very heavy (losing more than 3 Tbs. of blood) and/or prolonged (lasting longer than a week) menstrual periods with no known cause.
- Frequent bruising.
- Unusual bleeding from the mouth or gums following dental procedures, or from brushing and flossing with an absence of gum disease.
- Frequent and/or prolonged nosebleeds. Bleeding from small cuts that ooze blood or start and stop bleeding repeatedly over several hours.
- Cuts and wounds that don't heal normally and become infected easily. Prolonged bleeding after injury or surgery.
- Unexplained joint pain.
- Blood in the stool or urine.
- One or more family members (male or female) who have similar symptoms or a diagnosis of hemophilia or a hereditary bleeding disorder.
